Mitski Is An Emotional Wreck on New Song “I’ll Change For You”

Mitski has finally returned to music after a near three-year wait, and so has her heartache. 

Many songs from her early discography reflect this aspect of her personality, as she is known for her emotional messaging. Her newest single in particular, I’ll Change For You has similar descriptors to I’m Your Man from The Land is Inhospitable And So Are We and The Only Heartbreaker from Laurel Hell. These songs, among others, display the feeling of one-sided longing and waiting for someone to notice you. I’ll Change For You, however, describes shifting the mold of who you are, and bottling up all the unpleasant parts about yourself to produce a squeaky-clean, often inauthentic version, just to keep someone in your life.

The song starts with a lofi/bossa nova-esque beat that immediately places the listener in the setting of the song. It feels lonely and reclusive, with the instrumental building as if the speaker is wallowing in their melancholy. By the chorus, their feelings erupt, reflected by the violin encroaching around the lyrics like cries for help.

“Cause I’ll do anything / For you to love me again / If you don’t like me now / I will change for you” 

The chorus is simple, and that’s the point – it explains the real reason behind the speaker’s desperation; they just want to be loved by this person. Only on the second chorus does this desperation intensify, and Mitski belts out her thoughts instead of retreating to her head voice like many longtime listeners are used to. I felt a connection with that contrast in dynamics as a musical theatre performer, and the way that our voices are used to tell a story. Mitski, without a doubt, has always done an incredible job at this. Her singing is raw and unfiltered, but also soft when it needs to be. Mitski switching from a head voice to chest voice is not necessarily a show of talent, it’s intentional so we know what the speaker is going through and how they wish to tell their story.

The visualization of this song is also quite powerful. On the lyrics “Bars, such magic places / You can be with other people / Without having anyone at all,” we hear ambient noise seemingly coming from this bar (drinks clinking, chatter) while the lyrics are sung. It recalls the feeling of observing life go by around you while a negative external factor is flooding your mind, making it impossible to focus on anything else. Mitski then carries her imagination further with the lines, “Watching all the cars passing by / Like a kid waiting for my ride.” This simile feels like a humiliation ritual for the speaker, and could be a symbol for them waiting for love that will never come. The love they describe in the song is neglectful and non-reciprocal, not like a protective adult figure driving to bring a kid home.

All in all, Mitski’s I’ll Change For You is a mellow, relatable bop if you’ve also never gotten over any situation in your life, as well as a masterclass in storytelling through voice and visuals.
